Five Point Friday

Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.

1.) WTA Returning to China

As announced yesterday, the WTA will resume events in China this September. They’ve cited a lack of change under their current approach and the negative impact of their stance on tournaments and players as core reasons for a shift in their position. Despite not achieving their goals of having a member of the WTA meet with Peng Shuai or having the allegations properly invested, they’ve been assured by people close to her that she’s living safely with her family.

2.) Medvedev’s New String

Players are usually unwilling to change their gear when the going’s good. However, after a lackluster 2022 by his standards, Daniil decided to experiment with a new string Tecnfibre presented him in the offseason. Razor Soft uses the same co-poly ingredients as its older brother Razor Code but adds polyurethane for a softer response that, per Daniil, adds power without losing control. It’s available starting this week.

3.) Saudi Arabia & Tennis

Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated shares some insights into the complicated future of tennis in Saudi Arabia beyond sportswashing. His commentary stems from a reader’s recent viewing of his 60 Minutes piece, which I also found interesting. Together, they provide interesting context if you’ve heard of the topic but haven’t dug into it.

4.) Jabeur’s Latest Tweener

Not a player to shy away from trick shots, Ons Jabeur hit her most recent tweener at the Charleston Open, which she finished off with a delicate passing shot. If you want a quick pick-me-up this morning, check it out.

5.) Osaka’s Big Plans

Naomi Osaka is due to give birth in June or July but isn’t shying away from her ambitions on her return to professional tennis. During an interview on Japanese TV (in English), Naomi shared her goal of winning eight more Grand Slams and gold at the French Olympics, fueled by the inspiration of her coming child.
