Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) Serena Skips Australian Open
On Wednesday, Serena Williams confirmed she wouldn’t be playing the Australian Open following advice from her medical team. She hasn’t played a match since retiring from the first round at Wimbledon with a hamstring injury.
All our love, @serenawilliams 💙

2.) Tennis in Extreme Wind
In the first round of the MTA Open in Turkey, players faced ultra windy conditions. One point from the tournament stood out with Fabian Marozsan shanking a ball, which led to an unexpected outcome for the point.
One of the craziest shots you’ll ever see! 🤯
As they say, sometimes it’s better to be lucky. Just a bit windy today in Antalya 💨 pic.twitter.com/yPEOHS5LI6

3.) Andreescu’s Struggle to Return
Following a difficult and emotional 2021, Canadian world No. 46 announced she wouldn’t be playing in the Australian Open. Bianca last played at the BNP Paribas Open, eventually falling to Anett Kontaveit in the third round. In her message to fans, she sighted a range of reasons mentally and physically to give herself extra time to reset and recover.

4.) New French Open Director
Former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner Amélie Mauresmo will become the first woman to lead Roland-Garros in 2022. At 42, she’ll succeed Guy Forget, whose contract was set to expire and resigned from his position, which he’s held since 2016.

5.) Darlene Hard Dies at 85
Tennis Hall of Famer, who won 21 major titles in the 50s and 60s, passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles due to complications from a fall. In 1957, she reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 in singles and claimed three Grand Slam titles in the discipline. However, most of her success came in doubles, where she won 13 doubles majors and five in mixed doubles.
