Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) WTA Suspends China Events
In a bold move, WTA Chairman & CEO Steve Simon announces the WTAs suspension of tournaments in China. From the beginning, the organization has made it clear these would be the consequences if Chinese officials didn’t fully address Peng Shuai’s allegation of sexual assault against a top government official.
2.) Best ATP Matches 2021
As we near the end of 2021, I spent some time looking back on the best matches of the year thanks to a five-part YouTube playlist the ATP put together for fans. If you’re itching for some high-quality tennis ahead of 2022, it’s well worth checking out.
3.) Johanna Konta Retires
At the age of 30, British tennis player Johanna Konta has announced her retirement from professional tennis. Johanna reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in 2017, claimed four singles titles, including a win at the Miami Open, and earned $10,008,175 in prize money. According to an interview with The Guardian, she doesn’t feel like she has the energy to continue enduring the significant commitments of elite tennis.

4.) Davis Cup Semis & Final
The tennis season is over, but players are still battling it out at the Davis Cup in Madrid. The semi-finals start tomorrow, with Croatia facing Serbia. On Saturday, Germany will compete against Russia, and the finals between the two winners will be held on Sunday.
5.) Djokovic’s Dad on AO
In an interview on Sunday, Srdjan Djokovic suggested Novak is unlikely to play the Australian Open due to the tournament’s vaccination requirements, which has led many news outlets to report he won’t play. However, Novak hasn’t made an official statement on his participation. Currently, he’s competing for Serbia in the Davis Cup.
