Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) Roger Federer’s Knee Surgery
Yesterday, Federer announced that he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in Switzerland. You might remember he had a similar surgery back in February of 2016, but that was on his left knee. He’ll miss a few of the larger upcoming tournaments, but is targeting a return for grass season.

2.) Gaël Monfils BTB Titles
At 33 years old, Frenchman Gaël Monfils claimed back to back titles to bring his total to ten. First, in Montpellier, France, and then in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he defended his 2019 title against 19-year-old Next Gen contender Felix Auger-Aliassime. Monfils is a well-respected player and famous for his athleticism and acrobatics on the court.
3.) Clijsters vs. Muguruza Highlights
For the first time since 2012, 36-year-old Kim Clijsters returned to the pro tour playing Garbiñe Muguruza in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Championships. Despite the 6-2, 7-6 loss, she received wide praise throughout the sporting world for her impressive play and competitive spirt.
4.) Turbulent Match in Rio
During the round of 32 matchup at the Rio Open between Spaniard, Davidovich Fokina, and Brazilian, Thiago Seyboth Wild, things got a little heated. It all started with an underarm serve from Fokina, which the hometown crowd wasn’t a fan of, and ultimately made for an entertaining match.
5.) 16 Year Old’s 1st ATP Win
Playing in his first-ever ATP match, Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz Garfia defeated tour veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a third-set tiebreak that lasted over three and a half hours. He’d fall to Federico Coria from Argentina in the round of 16 but appears to have a bright future ahead and was fun to watch.
If you have a moment, I’d love to hear your feedback. Which topic is your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of each week?
