Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) Australian Open Champs
Although I’m sure you already know, it’s hard not to pay tribute to Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty’s efforts at the 2022 Australian Open. Rafa’s comeback in the final from two sets down this early after returning from injury was insane, especially to reach his 21st Grand Slam title against one of the more dominant younger players. On the other hand, Ash has been so consistent, didn’t drop a single set the whole tournament, and still got the job done on her home turf despite the pressure. Congrats to both!
2.) New Wilson Clothing Line
Wilson has been a dominant player in the racquet and string industry, and slowly they’ve been working their way into footwear and apparel. Recently, they dropped an entirely new stylish line of men’s and women’s tennis apparel, which looks great. I own a few of their items, and they’re super comfortable, so I’m excited to try out some of their latest gear.

3.) Del Potro’s Return
At 33 years old, former US Open Champ and world No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro is returning to action on the ATP Tour. It’s the first time he’ll compete since 2019 after undergoing four knee surgeries. Delpo accepted a wild card for next week’s ATP 250 in Buenos Aires and the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro the following week. Wishing him the best of luck in his return!

4.) Solinco Tennis Racquets?
Solinco’s has made a name for itself in the string market, especially with polyester tennis strings like Hyper-G and Confidential. Now they’re launching a new set of tennis racquets, the control-oriented 98 square inch Whiteout and a more powerful 100 square inch Blackout. According to Solinco, expanding beyond strings has always been part of their plan, and it’s not the first time they’ve dabbled with racquets. However, after three years of testing, the new frames are ready to go.
5.) CiCi Bellis Retires
In 2017, the WTA awarded American CiCi Bellis as Newcomer of the Year when she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 35 that year. However, after finding herself in a cycle of rehab, training, and arm injuries for three years, she’s hanging up the racquets, having felt mentally and physically exhausted. Outside of tennis, she pursued a business degree and is now working full-time as an investment analyst with plans for an MBA.
