The robust Gamma Shockbuster II builds upon the success of the original Shockbuster accessory with a second Zorbicon-filled tube to maximize the impact of what players can expect from a vibration dampener.

In this test and review, I provide detailed insight into the dampener’s design, fit and installation, and performance while sharing my honest assessment of its downsides to help you decide if it’s a good fit.

Here’s a brief video where I share an up-close view of the Gamma Shockbuster II’s design, including how to install it.

Design

A Front View Of The Gamma Shockbuster II

With its functional design, the Gamma Shockbuster II features two gel strips filled with their exclusive Zorbicon gel. Clear plastic hooks fasten the dampener to the vertical strings on either end for a secure fit. A small detail: my only issue with these hooks is that their size prevents the dampener from sitting flush against the bottom cross string.

Although it’s not the most stylish, it comes in a few different color combinations for a bit of personality. The latest generation also has a no-spill gel formula, so it won’t make a mess if it snaps.

It’s bulky, measuring 106.2 mm long, 10.3 mm tall, and 4.5 mm thick, yet it’s still lightweight at only 4.2 grams. Therefore, I found it to have a minor impact on my racquet’s specs, including its balance.

Pros Cons
Will never fall out Heaviest of all options
Maximum dampening Difficult to install
No loud branding Not aesthetically pleasing
Eliminates ping Only one dampener
Enhances feel Plastic clips are susceptible to breaking

Fit & Installation

The Gamma Shockbuster II Installed In a Racquet

The Shockbuster II weaves between vertical strings with clips to secure the ends, and in my testing, it fits a wide range of racquets. However, due to its thicker design, I found inserting it a bit more awkward on racquets with smaller head sizes and tighter string patterns.

To install it, I first set one of the clips on the fifth string from the center two mains and weave the dampener to the other side. Once it doesn’t travel any further, I’ll move back to the clipped end, gently pull the dampener snug until I reach the unclipped end, and fasten it.

Once set in place, I’ll lightly adjust the dampener’s tension across the eight strings it covers and push it up against the bottom cross string.

Although relatively durable, I encourage players to avoid overstretching the dampener when pulling it through the strings, as the portion of the dampener connecting the clips is the most susceptible to breaking.

Performance

A Side View Of The Gamma Shockbuster II

The Shockbuster II lives up to its name, effortlessly eliminating the harsh ping sound of my racquet while providing what I’ve found to be an unmatched level of vibration reduction. This results in a plush, somewhat muted feel and nearly undetectable feedback to my hand.

Downsides

Weighing the Gamma Shockbuster II On a Digital Scale

Beyond a somewhat cumbersome installation on racquets with tighter string spacing, I find the dampener hooks at either end its biggest weakness because they can break off if stretched too far or unintentionally come in contact with the ball when hitting.

On a minor note, I find its size and design a bit silly-looking. However, I expect most players seeking its higher-level vibration-dampening performance will be able to forgive its imperfect visual appeal.

Test Summary

The Gamma Shockbuster II is a practical and effective vibration dampener that silences my racquet’s ping while providing an unmatched level of vibration reduction for a softer feel.

Who Should Buy It

I recommend the Gamma Shockbuster II to players looking for maximum vibration dampening that’s a cut above the competition to silence the ping of their racquet while softening its feel.
