Five Point Friday

Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.

1.) ATP Finals Wrapping Up

The Nitto ATP Finals in Torino, Italy, is nearing the end, with players from the group stage beginning to emerge as semifinalists. If you’d like to enjoy the tail end of the tournament, the semifinals will be Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Here’s a list of the broadcasters for the event where you can watch it.

2.) Wimbledon’s Rule Change

In 2023, it’s expected that women and girls will be able to wear colored underwear to reduce the anxiety they experience playing Wimbledon during their menstrual cycle. Last year, protestors helped bring the issue into the limelight, with many players speaking publically about the subject. It’s unfortunate it took so long to address, but great to see there’s a change in sight.

3.) Nakashima Next Gen Champ

The Next Gen ATP Finals features the best up-and-coming players under 21, and this year Brandon Nakashima is the champion. He defeated Jiri Lehecka in the finals for the win, redeeming himself after falling in the semis of last year’s event. Throughout the tournament, he remained undefeated and took home a paycheck of $432,750 for his efforts.

4.) Swiss Win BJK Cup

On Sunday, Switzerland took down Australia to claim the country’s first-ever Billie Jean King Cup, a team event that started in 1963. Belinda Bencic defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the victory, two years in the making, having lost in last year’s final to Russia.

5.) Wilson Shift Prototype

Fifty lucky players were sent the Shift, Wilson Lab’s latest prototype, to test drive and provide feedback. Two models were sent to reviewers: the Shift 99 300 and the 99 315. The 99 refers to the head size, and 300 or 315 refers to the racquet’s weight. Reviewing images and posts, the 300 is a 16×19 string pattern, while the 315 is 18×20. Perhaps we might be seeing a Wilson Steam replacement on the horizon.
