Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) Player Council Restricts PTPA
In August, Novak Djokovic & Vasek Pospisil announced the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA). Shortly after, they were asked to resign from the ATP Player Council, which gives players a voice in the organization. Wednesday, a new twist emerged after they were both nominated by their peers for the ATP Player Council once again. However, the ATP Board blocked this possibility by voting on a new rule to ensure that they couldn’t be elected as members of the PTPA. It remains unclear how the two organizations will co-exist.
2.) 100-Year Old Still Playing Tennis
It’s really is never too late to start playing tennis. Born on October 15, 1920, Lloyd Lettis of Mountview, CA, first picked up a racquet at the age of 65, and 35 years later, he’s still out on the court swinging for the fences. Catch his interview and learn his secrets for living a long life.
3.) WTA Shot of the Year
It was an abbreviated 2020 season, but the WTA has pulled together their fan-voted list of the best shots in 2020. Each month fans vote for their favorite shot, which then becomes a finalist for fans to help declare the year’s best.
They all took home #ShotOfTheMonth honors, but only one can be named #ShotOfTheYear, presented by @Cambridge_FX!

4.) Shrinking Tennis Players
As Oscar Hinojosa’s Instagram account suggests, he shrinks people. I started seeing these pop up in my feed and thought they were pretty entertaining. So far, he’s shrunk Federer, Serena, Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, and Sharapova. Who’s next?

5.) Year-End #1: Ash Barty?
Ash Barty hasn’t played a tournament since late February of this year, yet she holds the year-end #1 ranking. How’s that possible? In part, it has to do with an extended window for calculating WTA Rankings. Usually, it’s a 52-week window, but due to the pandemic, it was extended from March 2019 through December 2020.
If you have a moment, I’d love to hear your feedback. Which topic is your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of each week?
