Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.
1.) Tennis LIV Golf-Style Takeover?
Peter Bodo of Tennis.com published a thought-provoking article about whether tennis is ripe for disruption, similar to how LIV Golf has shaken the professional golf landscape. In it, he offers his take along with insights to back up his thinking which I enjoyed reading.
2.) 1st Egyptian WTA Champ
World No. 74 Mayar Sherif of Egypt defeated No. 7 Maria Sakkari 7-5, 6-3 to win the Parma Ladies Open in Italy. Doing so, she earned her first top-ten win and career title and became the first Egyptian to win a WTA tournament.
3.) World Tennis League Dubai
Scheduled for Dec 19th – 24th, the World Tennis League will host its inaugural event in Dubai with headliners including Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek. The tournament will run a round-robin format featuring 16 players from the ATP and WTA tours with two-set singles and mixed doubles matches – tie-break sets will decide outcomes if necessary.
4.) Hyeon Chung’s ATP Return
You may remember Hyeon Chung’s semi-finals appearance at the Australian Open in 2018, where he defeated Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and Novak Djokovic before retiring against Roger Federer, the eventual champ. Suffering from a back injury, he hasn’t competed since September 2020. Now he’s back. He played doubles last week and plans to return to singles on the ATP Challenger tour in the coming weeks.
5.) TennisWorthy Video Series
TennisWorthy is a collection of short videos published by the Tennis Hall of Fame. As they describe it, the series “celebrates the moments that pull at our heart strings and remind us why we fell in love with this game. The moments that gave us chills, that made us stand in our seats, that made our jaws drop – these are the moments that define our sport.”
If you have a moment, I’d love to hear your feedback. Which topic is your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of each week?
