Size 64 Rubber Band Vibration
Dampener ~ Test & Review
Made famous by Andre Agassi, who used them in his racquet throughout his storied career, number 64 rubber bands are unexpected and quirky yet reasonably effective vibration dampeners.
In this test and review, I provide detailed insight into using rubber bands as dampeners, including their fit, installation, and performance. I also share my honest assessment of their downsides to help you decide if using them is a good fit for your needs.

Here’s a brief video in which I share an up-close view of the design of a size 64 rubber band, including how to install it.
Fit & Installation
Depending on your preference, installing a rubber band can be quick and easy or more challenging based on how many knots you tie.
I recommend wrapping one around the two center main strings of your racquet below the bottom cross string and tying at least one knot, but my preference is tying two for sure fit and better dampening.
If I tie two knots, I wrap the rubber band around the center main strings and pull it snugly before tying another knot, which gives me more excess material to hold onto and work with when tying the second.
Another option is to stretch the rubber band over four strings, pull it tight, and tie a single knot. However, I prefer the look and feel of covering only the two center main strings, which provides optimal performance.
Performance
When testing size 64 rubber bands, I found they mildly reduced the ping sound of my racquet. In other words, I can still hear the ping; it’s just muffled slightly, and the duration of the noise is shorter.
The unique part is that using a rubber band doesn’t change my racquet’s feel, which many players will find ideal. Instead of heavily reducing vibration, these have minimal impact, allowing more feedback to my hand and maintaining the existing feel of my racquet.
Downsides
I’ve found their main downside is that they provide a limited reduction in vibration for an accessory most players rely on to reduce it. Furthermore, they break easily, so I replace them every time I restring. Of course, they only cost a few cents each, so the latter issue is mostly irrelevant.
Although I don’t have any issues with their look, some players may find them a bit cheap or silly when installed, so that’s another factor to weigh if you’re considering using them. At the very least, if you have one lying around the house, it’s a cheap and effective way to experiment to see if vibration dampening is something you might enjoy.
Test Summary
Size 64 rubber bands are inexpensive and effective at lessening the audible ping sound my racquet makes when hitting, but I have not found them to significantly impact my racquet’s feel.
Who Should Buy It
I recommend size 64 rubber bands as vibration dampeners to players using any racquet head size or string pattern who want to minimize the ping sound of their racquet but prefer limited impact on its feel or specs.
