Thorlo Video Review
Check out my video below for a more visual walkthrough of my comparison and review of the Maximum Cushion, Lite Cushion, and Experia Ultra Lite tennis socks.
About Thorlo
In 1953, Jim Throneburg developed an Engineered Padded Technology for socks, an innovative approach to their design that adapts the padding density in areas prone to high wear and friction to deliver optimal comfort while reducing material in low-impact areas for a snug fit to aid support.
Years later, in 1980, Jim founded Thorlo in Statesville, NC, and the technology became a core tenant of the brand’s design and manufacturing process as they began developing socks for runners.
These days, Thorlo offers socks for several sports, including tennis, hiking, basketball, and golf, as well as options for everyday wear. They’ve also continued to pioneer unique technologies, such as NanoGlide, CuTEC Copper Ion, and Experia TechFit, while continuing to manufacture all of its stocks in the United States – a rarity these days.
You can buy Thorlo socks directly from their website for friendly customer service, which includes a 30-day trial and lifetime guarantee.

Materials
Looking at the materials of these three socks, we can start to glean the type of performance characteristics they’ll exhibit. Here’s a rough overview of what you can expect from the materials in use:
- Acrylic/Polyester: Comfort, Moisture-Wicking
- Nylon: Provide Support, Maintain Shape
- Elastic: Snug Fit, Prevent Socks from Falling
For starters, Thorlo’s Maximum Cushion socks use a high percentage of Thorlon, a proprietary acrylic, from which they get their soft, plush feel. This material also offers superior moisture-wicking to help keep your feet dry and prevent painful blisters that can wreak havoc while maintaining a moderate temperature when you sweat, perfect for cooler weather.
The Lite Cushion model uses Thorwick Cool polyester, another exclusive material from Thorlo. Like acrylic, polyester is excellent for overall comfort and moisture control while providing a cooling effect when you sweat. However, true to its name, the Lite Cushion uses polyester more sparingly, reducing the amount of padding compared to the Maximum Cushion.
Finally, the Experia Ultra Lite socks use traditional high-quality polyester in the lowest percentage of the three socks, reducing padding further for a responsive feel while maintaining excellent moisture control.
All three socks contain nylon and elastic but in varying percentages. The Maximum Cushion features the least of these materials, followed by the Lite Cushion and the Experia Ultra Lite with the most. As a result, as you move from Maximum Cushion down to the thinner Experia Ultra Lite socks, you’ll get less padding but a more supportive, locked-in, and snug fit closely tailored to the contours of your feet.
Tech
Unique technology is at the forefront of Thorlo’s designs, with each sock featuring a custom component that complements its performance.
Thorlon fibers deliver maximum padding and comfort, moisture control, and blister prevention for the Maximum Cushion. Meanwhile, their Lite Cushion socks feature Thorwich Cool Polyester to maintain comfort, wick moisture, and reduce blisters while cooling your feet as you sweat.
The Experia Ultra Lite socks feature Thorlo’s Tech Grip technology (shown above), a series of bands at the ball of your feet that enhance comfort, reduce friction, and prevent slippage inside your shoe.
Styles
All three tennis socks I evaluated offer excellent variety in styles, including crew, ankle, and low-cut. For a classic style, you can opt for the cuff top style, while sensitive legs benefit from a cuff top or roll top, reducing ankle constriction – both exclusive to Maximum Cushion.
It’s worth considering some of the functional differences between styles for playing tennis, including warmth and the amount of debris that makes it onto your legs (think clay). The higher the socks rise up your leg, the warmer they’ll be while providing greater protection from debris.
Of course, we can’t forget about the tan lines. Enough said.
Colors
For the most color options, look to the Maximum Cushion, which is available in four colors for the crew socks: black, white, lime, and periwinkle. Thorlo’s Lite Cushion socks are only available in white, while you can purchase the Experia Ultra Lite in black, white, and blue.
Beyond looks, keep in mind that the color of your socks may also influence their warmth. More specifically, a dark material exposed to the sun, as you’ll find with their black crew socks, will absorb more heat.
Weight
It might not come as a surprise, but the weight of each sock corresponds closely to the level of cushioning. The maximum Cushion is the heaviest at 52.2g, the Experia Ultra Lite weighs the least at only 32.5g, and the Lite Cushion falls in the middle at 45.2g per sock.
If speed is a priority, combining a lightweight sock with a lightweight shoe will help maintain the lowest overall weight so you can move quickly.
Height
Crew socks vary widely in height, and Thorlo’s Maximum Cushion, Lite Cushion, and Experia Ultra Lite socks are no exception. Each measures 7.250 in (18.4 cm), 6.125 in (15.6 cm), and 5.5 in (14 cm), respectively, from the base of each sock’s tube.
This measurement is mainly a style factor, as some players prefer their socks to ride a little higher or lower, but there’s also a compression component to keep in mind with higher socks. Overall, Thorlo’s Maximum and Lite Cushion socks are roughly above average in height compared to others, while the Experia Ultra Lite features a fairly standard height.
Sizing
As you select a tennis sock from Thorlo, pay close attention to how the sizes correspond to shoe sizes, as they differ slightly per model.
Here’s an overview of how the sizes of Maximum Cushion, Lite Cushion, and Experia Ultra Lite compare for the crew model.
Maximum Cushion | XS | S | M | L | XL |
US (W) | – | 4 – 6 | 6.5 – 10 | 10.5 – 13 | – |
US (M) | – | – | 5.5 – 8.5 | 9 – 12.5 | 13 – 15 |
US (Y) | – | 2 – 4 | – | – | – |
EURO | – | 35 – 37 | 38 – 42 | 43 – 47 | 48 – 50 |
UK | – | 2.5 – 4.5 | 5 – 8 | 8.5 – 12 | 12.5 – 14 |
Lite Cushion | XS | S | M | L | XL |
US (W) | 5 – 6.5 | 7 – 9 | 9.5 – 11.5 | – | – |
US (M) | – | 6 – 8 | 8.5 – 10 | 10.5 – 11.5 | 12 – 14 |
US (Y) | 3 – 4.5 | – | – | – | – |
EURO | 36 – 38 | 39 – 41 | 42 – 44 | 45 – 46 | 47 – 49 |
UK | 3.5 – 5 | 5.5 – 7.5 | 8 – 9.5 | 10 – 11 | 11.5 – 13 |
Experia Ultra Lite | XS | S | M | L | XL |
US (W) | – | 4 – 5.5 | 6 – 9 | 9.5 – 11.5 | – |
US (M) | – | – | 5 – 8 | 8.5 – 11 | 11.5 – 14 |
US (Y) | – | 3 – 4.5 | – | – | – |
EURO | – | 34 – 36 | 37 – 41 | 42 – 45 | 46 – 48 |
UK | – | 2 – 4 | 4.5 – 7.5 | 8 – 10 | 10.5 – 13 |
As you can see, shoe sizes vary in how they correspond to the size of the sock that will best fit. Using me as a point of reference, I’m a size 10.5 and wear larges in all these socks. Even for the Lite Cushion, where I fall on the low end of the size range, I find they all fit well.
Price
All Thorlo socks have a premium price point, which I recognize is a turnoff for some people considering them. Here’s how the three tennis models I tested compare in pricing per pair:
- Maximum Cushion: $16.99
- Lite Cushion: $17.99
- Experia Ulta Lite: $15.99
I get it; I felt the same way for a long time until I took the plunge and was skeptical of the difference.
However, rest assured, you’re getting a premium product for the price you pay that delivers above and beyond a typical sock and will last longer than those you buy for less, so you won’t need to replace them as often.
If you’re still doubtful, I suggest you take advantage of their Try Before You Buy program. You can order a pair of their Maximum or Lite Cushion today at no cost, including free shipping, and try them for 30 days. If you like them, you keep them, and they’ll charge your card at the end of the trial. Otherwise, you can return them; all you’ll pay is a few dollars in return shipping charges.
It’s also worth noting that you can save by buying more than one pair of socks. For example, with the Maximum Cushion crew, you’ll save 10% if you buy three and 17% if you buy six pairs. Here’s the breakdown in cost per pair for this particular model:
Maximum Cushion Crew | Total Cost | Cost/Pair | Savings |
1 Pack | $16.99 | $16.99 | 0% |
3 Pack | $45.87 | $15.29 | 10% |
6 Pack | $84.61 | $14.10 | 17% |
Yes, they’re still premium prices, but it’s well worth buying in bulk if you enjoy the socks after trying them.
Review & Test Results
Although there’s a lot you can learn about a sock from its design, materials, and construction, nothing beats trying them on and seeing how they feel when you’re on the court, so I put all three Thorlo socks to the test to see how they perform.
Methodology
To ensure consistency in my evaluation, I wore a pair of adidas Sole Court Boost tennis shoes to test and compare each pair of socks.
- Maximum Cushion TX
- Lite Cushion T1CXY
- Experia Ultra Lite EXTX00
I then put them through the same test criteria, including an initial try-on, identical footwork drills, tennis drills, and a 2-mile run on relatively flat terrain, to develop my test notes and compare each.
The following sections have detailed notes on how they performed for each criterion, which I follow up with a summary of findings.
Fit
Maximum Cushion featured above
Overall, the Maximum Cushion has an excellent fit, a lightweight feel, and a subtle yet gentle hug of the foot and leg.
The Lite Cushion delivers an ideal fit with slightly more pronounced pressure around your feet and legs, which is mildly snug.
Despite its smaller-looking size, the Ultra Lite easily stretches to offer a comfortable glove-like fit and hugs your foot without feeling like a compression sock.
Comfort
Lite Cushion featured above
The Maximum Cushion has a buttery-soft near-slipper-like feel underfoot, cushioning your step with apparent shock absorption and surprising breathability for the amount of material used in its design.
The Lite Cushion’s material is silky smooth, with a noticeable cushion under your heels and toes. It provides a moderate connection to the ground that softens impact and excellent breathability thanks to a thin upper panel.
The Experia Ultra Lite is a soft, stretchy, lower-profile sock with less padding than its Maximum and Lite Cushion counterparts. Its design allows for a more responsive, connected feel and top-notch breathability to keep feet cool.
It’s worth noting that the Maximum and Lite Cushion models offer ample back-of-the-heel protection, while the Ultra Lite’s cushioning in this area is present yet less pronounced.
Support
Experia Ultra Lite featured above
The Maximum Cushion is all about comfort. You’ll feel little to no hugging support throughout your foot, allowing your feet to breathe easily.
The Lite Cushion provides a step up in support from the Maximum Cushion. The snuggest portion of the sock is around your legs, but in all cases, it’s mostly a gentle hug for a confident feel.
The Experia Ultra Lite delivers a secure fit for a locked-in feel, with a band that hugs the arch of your foot to provide support. Despite their confident fit, they’re not overly tight or restrictive, thanks to their elastic fibers.
Moisture Control
Maximum Cushion featured above
The Maximum Cushion’s Thorlon acrylic fibers do an excellent job of wicking away sweat and keeping your feet feeling dry, even during intense sweat.
The Lite Cushion socks are excellent for controlling moisture and limiting a damp feel that can be distracting and lead to blisters. Their Thorwick Cool polyester also helps dissipate heat, keeping you cool as you sweat.
Like the Maximum and Lite Cushion socks, the Experia Ultra Lite handles moisture like a champ, wicking away sweat to maintain comfort and helping to prevent your feet from overheating during hot conditions.
Performance
Maximum Cushion featured above
During my test, Thorlo’s Maximum Cushion socks provided an exceptional cushion underfoot for added comfort and a material bump in shock absorption that reduced the harsh impact of the court. With the most material of the three socks, I did notice my feet got a little warm during the test when temperatures hovered around eighty degrees. However, it wasn’t to the point that it was uncomfortable, and the sock’s excellent moisture wicking helped ensure my feet were protected from blisters.
Lite Cushion featured above
The Lite Cushion balances comfort and performance, providing a connected yet soft feel in your shoes. There’s a noticeable cushion that helps ease the impact of the court, but it’s not as cloud-like as the Maximum Cushion. From a heat standpoint, these socks did an excellent job maintaining a comfortable environment for my feet thanks to their Thorwick Cool fibers, which also helped to manage sweat.
Experia Ultra Lite featured above
The Experia Ultra Lite is the least padded of the three socks, but it still provides adequate cushioning to protect your feet, especially under the ball of your foot, which takes the bulk of the impact. I also found the sock’s Tech Grip to help maintain control and limit slipping or sliding within the shoe during aggressive movement. Due to their material composition, I found these to be the coolest of the three socks, combined with top-notch moisture control to protect your feet from blisters.
It’s worth noting that all the socks have excellent stitching, especially around the toes, which can be problematic for some. I never felt any awkward bunching, friction, or rubbing that could cause problems.
Durability
Lite Cushion featured above
The Maximum Cushion features relatively loosely woven thicker fibers with the most open knitting pattern of the three socks. On the surface, this might lead you to believe they wouldn’t hold up as well under intense play and aggressive movements. However, after several uses and washes, they’re as good as new and show little to no signs of wear.
The Lite Cushion socks have held up very well. With a tighter knit and quality, long-lasting construction, they’re showing virtually no signs of wear, and I fully expect they’ll deliver above-average longevity.
The Experia Ultra Lite has the tightest fiber weave of the three, resulting in a highly durable construction that Thorlo built to last and has held up extremely well throughout my testing of the socks.
I encourage you to follow Thorlo’s care instructions closely to extend the life of each pair of socks, which have undoubtedly helped previous pairs I’ve owned last well over a year with aggressive use.
Summary of Findings
Thorlo’s Maximum Cushion, Lite Cushion, and Experia Ultra Lite all deliver above-average performance compared to standard socks and are some of the best I’ve tested.
Maximum Cushion
The Maximum Cushion socks from Thorlo are some of the most comfortable socks I’ve tested, delivering well above-average shock absorption and easing the impact of tennis on your feet.
If you wear a plush shoe but still suffer from discomfort, these socks will help take things to the next level and are a worthy investment for those looking for a new way to manage foot pain. They’re also great for bumping up the comfort of a shoe with a sub-par midsole without being too mushy, providing well-rounded performance for the most discerning players.
If you regularly play in temperates hovering at or above eighty degrees, heat is a factor, as the ample material of these socks keeps your feet warmer than average. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine a better option for shoulder seasons and cooler climates.
Lite Cushion
Overall, the Lite Cushion is a crowd-pleaser. They provide plenty of padding to deliver excellent protection and reduce impact. However, the buffer is less pronounced than the Maximum Cushion and more performance-oriented for players who don’t require next-level comfort.
From ultra-plush tennis shoes to lower-profile models, these socks will enhance comfort for a wide range of players and provide reliable and balanced performance that doesn’t over-index in any area.
If you’re on the hunt for a better sock than your run-of-the-mill variety, these are a terrific go-to option that’s unlikely to disappoint, which also makes them a fantastic option as a gift.
Experia Ultra Lite
Thorlo is well-known for its high-comfort socks. However, the Experia Ultra Lite is worth a closer look for players who prefer a super responsive and supportive feel with less bulk and quality foot protection.
As a bonus, these socks feature an anatomical design, which means they’re labeled for your left and right foot to ensure a precise fit, delivering high-end performance for aggressive movers.
If you’re a competitive player looking for a sock that’ll enhance your court feel while providing next-level performance and foot protection, the Experia Ultra Lite is an ideal model to up your sock game.
Washing & Care
To extend the life of your Thorlo socks, here are a few tips they recommend that I’ve also found practical and helpful to get the most out of my investment in their socks.
- Wash quickly. The acids in your sweat can deteriorate the socks, so washing them soon after use is ideal.
- Wash warm to cold. Don’t wash your socks with hot water; use warm, cool, or cold water for the best result.
- Wash with similar colors. To avoid dark socks coloring light clothes or dark clothes coloring light socks, wash them in similar colors.
- Use Gentle cycles. When washing, use a permanent press or gentle cycles; when drying, use low heat or tumble dry with the socks turned inside out to avoid shrinkage, prevent fiber breakdown, and restore the fluff for maximum padding and protection.
- Avoid bleach. Chlorinated bleach will deteriorate the fibers and cause a breakdown of elasticity, so don’t use it.
- Add fabric softener. It lubricates fibers and extends wear for longer-lasting flex and stretch.
- Fully dry. Putting your socks away damp can lead to premature breakdown of elastic fibers.
- Put on with care. Start with the toes, pull gently to the heel, and finally up your leg rather than pulling your entire foot in while holding the top of the sock, which weakens stretchy fibers.
- Clip loose fibers. If a fiber comes loose from the sock, don’t worry; it’s natural. Don’t pull it; clip it with scissors to prevent unraveling.
These are fantastic tips for most performance fabrics. If doing separate loads of laundry specifically for your socks sounds over the top, consider using these tips to wash all your tennis and workout gear together.
Wrapping Up
If you’re in the market for a new pair of tennis socks, it’s hard to go wrong with a pair from Thorlo. They offer something that caters to nearly every player’s needs and a level of quality that delivers on its promises.
If you decide to take the plunge and test them out, I hope my comparison and review help you decide which of their socks is the best fit for your needs or, at the very least, provides food for thought on the type of socks you wear to perform and feel your best on the court.
