Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.
1.) Sinner Leads Italy to Victory
Capping off a tremendous end to the year, Jannik Sinner helped lead Italy to their first Davis Cup victory in nearly 50 years. To get there, he beat Novak Djokovic in the semis for the second time in weeks and, as icing on the cake, topped him with partner Lorenzo Sonego in doubles. Italy sealed the title with a 2-0 victory over Australia.
2.) Winds of Change in Tennis
A recent article from The Athletic dives deep to shed some light on the changes that may surface in tennis, including a ‘Premier Tour,’ involving the Grand Slams and other top events, with guaranteed salaries and more forgiving schedules. Although the talks are ongoing, the changes would likely transform the sport if they were to push forward.
3.) Carlos Wows… Again
Playing Tommy Paul at an exhibition tournament in Mexico City, Carlos Alcaraz pulled yet another on-the-run stunner, freezing Paul at the net and bringing fans to their feet.
The shot that Alcaraz just hit in Mexico City. 🤣

4.) Ajla’s Comeback & Trophy
In April, Ajla Tomljanovic reached a career-high ranking of No. 32. However, a knee injury forced her out of play for the first seven months of 2023, sinking her ranking to No. 532. Fighting to come back, she accepted a wild card for the MundoTenis Open in Brazil and won the tournament, a super positive end to a challenging stretch, complete with one of the year’s most unique trophies.
