Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.
1.) Rafa to Return In Brisbane
In a video on Instagram, Rafel Nadal announced his planned return to tennis in Brisbane, the first week of January, after a year away from the sport.
2.) Wozniacki Earns Wildcard
Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who won the Australian Open in 2018, has been awarded a wildcard to the year’s first Grand Slam event. She made an impressive comeback in August last year, reaching the fourth round at the US Open before falling to eventual champion Coco Gauff.
3.) Piers Morgan vs. Nick Kyrgios
English broadcaster Piers Morgan and Nick Kyrgios have had a pretty rough relationship over the years, pulling no punches and publicly sharing exactly what they think about each other. As a result, Nick’s appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored made for an entertaining interview.
4.) GQ Brazil’s Woman of the Year
GQ Brazil named 27-year-old Beatriz Haddad Maia Woman of the Year, notably gracing the front of the magazine’s Men of the Year issue. This year, she reached the semifinals at Roland Garros, becoming the first Brazilian woman to do so in the Open Era. She also won her first WTA 1000 title in doubles with Victoria Azarenka in Madrid and broke into the top 10 in singles and doubles.
5.) Djokovic’s Racquet at Auction
In 2016, Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray to win his first French Open title and twelfth overall. After the match, he tossed his racquet into the crowd, which one lucky fan caught. Years later, she put it up for auction, which fetched a pretty penny earlier this week. Can you guess the final bid?
