Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.
1.) Women’s AO Final Set
World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka will face off against No. 15 Qinwen Zheng in the women’s Australian Open final on Saturday. As the reigning champ, Aryna is the heavy favorite on a dominant winning streak. Meanwhile, Qinwen will appear in her first major final, looking for the biggest win of her career.
2.) Baseline Volley Winner
During the second set of his match against Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic showed the tennis world something new: a serve and baseline volley for a winner. Sound wild? It definitely was – something you’ll have to see to believe.
3.) Longest Slam Tiebreak
Coming into the Australian Open as one of the favorites, No. 3 Elena Rybakina was halted in the second round by No. 57 Anna Blinkova with a twist. They played a 42-point tiebreak in the third set, the longest ever at a women’s Grand Slam event. Serving for her 10th match point, Anna closed it out 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (22-20).
4.) Defending 4 Overheads
There’s something incredibly satisfying about winning a point playing an insane amount of defense. During his third-round match, Stefanos Tsitsipas did just that, returning four straight overheads before closing out the point.
5.) Teen Stuns Swaitek
At 19 years old, Linda Noskova rose to the occasion, coming back from a set down to take out world No. 1 Iga Swaitek 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Gotta love it!
