Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.
1.) 2023 RG Champions 🏆
Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek are this year’s champions at Roland Garros! Although it’s no big surprise to anyone, I’d be remiss not to pay a small tribute to their success. Nole’s record-breaking 23 Grand Slam titles and Iga’s fourth, including three at the French Open. Where to next? Do you think they can pull off back-to-back titles at Wimbledon? It wouldn’t surprise me.
2.) Kyrigios Asks for Patience
World No. 25, Nick Kyrigios, asked fans for patience as he attempts a return to form. On Tuesday, he played his first match of 2023, losing in straight sets to Wu Yibing. Nick spent the past few months recovering from a January surgery to repair a torn meniscus, and as last year’s Wimbledon finalist, will have plenty of eyes on him leading up to the tournament.
Be patient with me my fans please…. It’s a process to get back to where I was. I know it’s hard for you to see me perform like today, but I need more time and hopefully can get back to where I was.

3.) ESTHER: Tennis Robot
Move over ball machines; there’s a new robot in town. ESTHER, for Experimental Sport Tennis Wheelchair Robot, is the brainchild of associate robotics professor Matthew Gombolay and his team at Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing. After two years of development, they’ve trained ESTHER to consistently locate and return tennis balls. Although it’s a long way from primetime, it gives athletes a glimpse into the future of training technologies.
4.) Tennis Stars as Pixar Characters
Ever wonder what the world’s biggest tennis stars would like as Pixar characters? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun. In an article produced entirely by AI, WSN published a piece showing what 20 different athletes would look like as Pixar Characters, complete with entertaining descriptions.
5.) Mannarino’s Big Win
World No. 52, Adrian Mannarino produced his biggest ever win by ranking, taking out the world No. 3, Daniil Medvedev, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the Libeman Open. During the match, the two produced one of the most entertaining points of the tournament, a 30-shot rally that ended in Mannario’s favor.
UNBELIEVABLE 🤯
