Five Point Friday
Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week in tennis.
1.) Brady & Wozniacki Surge
Caroline Wozniacki and Jennifer Brady have been absent from the tour for a few years, and both recently returned, Caroline from retirement and Jennifer from injury. Each has found their way into the third round of the US Open, defeating seeded players en route. Caroline ousted 11th seed Petra Kvitova, and Jennifer took out 24th seed Magda Linette. Now, they’ll face off in what should be an entertaining match as they fight for a spot in the fourth round.
2.) Gift for 1st Time Qualifiers
It’s a special moment when players qualify for their first US Open. However, the Tournament Director, Stacey Allaster, and USTA President Brian Hainline take things further with an in-person congrats, a framed photo from their winning match, and a game ball. I wasn’t unaware of this tradition and thought commemorating the achievement was a pretty cool idea.
A peek behind the curtain as to how the US Open tries to honor first-time qualifiers for the main draw.

3.) Tech at the US Open
PCMag goes behind the scenes with IBM to review the tech powering the US Open. From AI highlights to their data command center, it’s a robust setup. One new addition to their portfolio of resources that caught my eye is the Coach Advisor app that USTA staff use to track the performance and stats of players to help coaches adjust tactics in real-time.
4.) Coco Goes for Early Hug
During her second-round doubles match, Coco Gauff accidentally lost track of the score and went in for an early hug with her partner Jessica Pegula. Whoops! It was a funny moment that they quickly shook off, serving it out in the next game.
5.) Why Players Yell at Coaches
Players yelling at their boxes and coaches isn’t new, but some find it perplexing. Digging deeper, a reporter asked Daniil Medvedev for his explanation. Can you guess his answer?
Daniil Medvedev was asked why tennis players yell at their team after missing a shot, bc it doesn’t happen in other sports:
“I don’t really have an explanation. I’d generally think tennis drives people crazy. Tennis players drive themselves crazy.”😂
