Skirts are one of the most popular selections for dressing up on the court, but they’re far from the only option when choosing your next outfit.
For most, the decision between one type of bottom over another is style and comfort, both of which are worthy considerations.
Skirts
We love skirts. They’re easily mixed and matched with different tops for added variety and unique outfits that we can change up on the fly, making them a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
Beyond versatility, there are a wide variety of styles to suit an ever-growing range of styles and preferences. Although it’s more common to find them these days with compression shorts built-in, some companies make them without if that’s what you prefer.
If you’re buying your first tennis skirt, we recommend starting with one that’s black or white to give yourself plenty of styling options, which will never feel repetitive without having to spend too much.
Shorts
For years, tennis shorts had a bad wrap, but they’re making a comeback, and they’re as comfortable and stylish as ever.
If you don’t feel comfortable wearing skirts, then shorts are an excellent, more conservative option. You won’t find quite as much variety in this category, but there are plenty of practical choices to consider.
Keep in mind that some shorts offer built-in compression shorts, while others don’t, depending on your preference.
Skorts
Neither skirt nor short, but a blend between the two, skorts have a unique history with tennis that dates back to the 1930s when Lili Alvarez first wore them, dubbed “robe-pants,” at the French Championships (now the French Open) and Wimbledon, which led to a bit of controversy.
A skort is a pair of shorts with a piece of fabric in the front and sometimes the back, giving them a skirt’s appearance. Although they’ve evolved significantly since their inception, they remain popular, offering the comfort and coverage of shorts with a bit of flair.
These days, the lines between tennis skirts and skorts have blurred somewhat because the vast majority of skirts have built-in compression shorts underneath. With this in mind, you’ll often see the naming of each comingled, so it’s worth searching for both for the largest selection.
Leggings
From yoga to running, tennis, and virtually every sport in-between, leggings have become an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe.
Leggings are tight-fitting yet comfortable, offering breathable warmth and with a surprising amount of flex. These days they’re also lighter and moisture-wicking to help keep players dry.
If you’re playing in cooler climates or merely looking for all-over coverage of your legs, then leggings, which are also available as capris, are an excellent option, which you can even wear under a skirt.
Pants & Joggers
If tight-fitting leggings aren’t your cup of tea, then a classic pair of athletic pants or joggers might be your best bet for cold weather.
Of course, they work just as well for lounging or wearing over your shorts or skirt to stay warm before a match.
Dresses
We’d be remiss in covering all types of bottoms for women’s tennis without touching on dresses. Although they seem to have fallen somewhat out of style for tennis players, you’ll still find them from the pro tour to your local public courts.
For a bit of extra style without giving up comfort, keep dresses in mind when searching for your next tennis outfit.
Tennis vs. Golf Skirts
One of the more common questions we get about tennis skirts is how they differ from golf skirts and if you can wear them golfing. The truth is, they’re not all that different functionally. However, they don’t always cross-over, so let’s dive a bit deeper to clear the air.
Regardless of where you look, the main point of contention when wearing a skirt for golf is the length. Most golf courses have relatively strict dress codes, some more conservative than others.
Although public courses tend to be the most lenient, they usually have a dress code, even if they don’t enforce it rigorously.
At a minimum, you’ll find many golf courses require a skirt to pass the length of your fingertips when standing straight, but many prestigious or exclusive clubs will expect the hem to fall below the knees.
With that in mind, some longer tennis skirts will work, but most are shorter for maximum comfort and range of motion, so it’s very likely the one you own isn’t sufficient.
However, there is a workaround that’s sufficient for many golf courses. If you want to wear your shorter skirt, you can usually get away with it if you wear athletic tights or leggings underneath.
Regardless, it’s best to check a course’s policies beforehand on the required length and, when in doubt, be conservative and go longer.
Features to Consider
Shopping for a tennis skirt isn’t rocket science, but there are a handful of features to keep in mind to help you find one you’ll love.
Shorts vs. No Shorts
Most these days will come with built-in shorts underneath for comfort and freedom of movement. However, there still are more than a handful of brands that intentionally don’t include them.
Overall, it’s a personal preference. If you have a preferred type of compression shorts, or you’d like more flexibility in the length of the shorts, then you might prefer them without built-in shorts.
If you don’t opt for a skirt with built-in shorts, then keep in mind that you may need to contend with it riding up as you play.
Materials
Most skirts are plenty comfortable, and you won’t necessarily know what you like until you try a few on, but here are some of the materials that you’re likely to stumble upon:
- Polyester
- Spandex
- Lycra
- Nylon
- Elastane
By far, polyester and spandex are the most common materials. However, keep in mind that different parts of the skirt will often feature varying materials or percentages of materials for the ideal fit and comfort.
You might consider checking the materials for some of your favorite athletic attire as a point of reference before buying a skirt.
Length
Generally, skirts will fall between 11 and 17 inches, with the vast majority between 12 and 14 inches.
However, keep in mind that the size of a skirt often dictates the length to a degree, i.e., the larger the size, the longer the skirt.
The amount the length increases between sizes differs from one skirt to another. However, it’s usually a consistent increase in length as you move from one size to the next, typically ranging from .25 – 1 inch.
Inseam Length
To the surprise of some, many skirts will list an inseam length. When displayed, the inseam length refers to the built-in shorts.
The inseam length refers to the distance between the seam at the crotch down to the bottom-most portion of the shorts, which can help you understand how far down your leg they will fall.
Rise
A skirt’s rise describes where you should wear the skirt relative to your true waistline. When brands design skirts, the rise is part of the design consideration, which influences the skirt’s style.
However, in addition to style, a skirt’s rise will also influence how comfortable you feel wearing a particular design. Most women gravitate to specific styles that they feel at their best when wearing.
Here is how you will most commonly see rises communicated:
- High: skirt sits at or above the navel
- Mid: skirt sits just below the navel
- Low: skirt sits roughly at the hip bones
There are, of course, variations on these rises that you might find, i.e., ultra or super low rise, which are relative to the above descriptions.
Ball Pocket
Depending on your preference, you may choose to approach the service line for a point with two balls or one.
Serena Williams is an excellent example of a player who prefers to go to the line with a single ball and then turns to the ball person for a second ball if she needs it, which is a personal preference. In her case, a ball pocket is unnecessary as she’s not using it.
However, most of us aren’t lucky enough to play with a ball person, so it’s useful to keep a second ball in your pocket when serving to avoid breaking your rhythm between serves and helping keep play moving.
If you’d like your skirt to have a ball pocket, you have two choices. You can buy a skirt with the pocket on the outside, or you can opt for one that has the pocket sewn into the built-in compression shorts.
Most skirts will opt for the latter design, which keeps the outward appearance of the skirt clean and simple, but both are available.
However, it’s also worth noting that some players will stash a ball right above the hem on the built-in shorts if there isn’t a ball pocket. The only drawback is that the material will tend to stretch out over time.
Helpful Tip
Some skirts now come with pockets large enough to stash your cell phone for listening to music while running or when you’re out and about.
No-slip Hem
A tennis skirt’s built-in compression shorts may ride up while playing, which can be distracting and somewhat frustrating for players.
If that’s a problem for you, consider looking for one that includes a rubber grip at the hem of the shorts to prevent them from riding up.
Lululemon is one company that offers this feature for some of their skirts.
Zipper Pocket
Another somewhat common feature that you’ll find available on tennis skirts is a zipper pocket, usually at the back near the waistline.
These are usually smaller pockets that can fit your keys, some cash, a credit card, ID, and in some cases, your phone if you’re going to be out and about before or after playing tennis.
UV Protection
Finally, if you frequently play tennis outside and protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays is important, then you might consider a skirt that offers UV protection built into the fabric.

Straight
As it sounds, a straight skirt offers a relatively fitted or snug form-fitting design that doesn’t flare out much, if at all.
For added freedom during movement, many feature a slit. The adidas Core Club Skirt is an excellent example.
A-line
An A-line skirt offers players a snug fit at the waist, which increases in width down to the hem. The resulting shape resembles the capital letter A, which is where it gets its name.
A-line tennis skirts are some of the most common and come in various lengths and styles, which is one reason for their popularity. You’ll find A-line skirts available by virtually every top brand.
Pleated
Pleated skirts are popular on and off the court. This kind of skirt has folds or pleats stitched at the waist to reduce the fullness of a wider piece of fabric for a unique and distinct style that has more volume.
Some skirts will feature pleats all the way around the skirt, while others will showcase them only toward the back or the sides.
Flutter
Another fun style is the flutter skirt, which fits snugly from the waist through the mid-thigh, but flares or flutters toward the bottom.

After you track down a new skirt, you might be stuck on the perfect outfit to complete the style. Here are a few of our favorite looks for inspiration when hitting the court.
With a Tank
Nine out of ten women on the WTA complete their look with a tank. Tanks are sporty and practical, helping to keep you cool, and available in a wide range of styles.
With a Short Sleeve
If you’re not comfortable wearing a tank or you’re just looking to keep it simple, then pairing your skirt with a short sleeve is a great way to style your outfit for an understated look.
