Center Court at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco for the Mexican Open

Mexican Open, Acapulco Prize Money

2023 Breakdown & Historicals

By Jon Crim

Held annually since 1993, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco is one of 13 ATP 500 tournaments held annually across the globe. Until 2020, the WTA also ran a 250-level event here but has since replaced it with a tournament in Monterrey, Mexico.

Initially, the tournament took place on clay courts, but in 2014 transitioned to hard courts to better align with the ATP’s schedule and serve as a warm-up to the first Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, CA.

For 2023, the Mexican Open’s total prize money is $2,013,940, which translates to €1,897,131 and £1,678,719, a sizable 20% increase over the prior year’s event and the tournament’s highest purse ever.

The singles champion will earn $376,620 for his efforts, while the runner-up will take home $202,640, representing a 20% increase for both players who make it to the finals.

In doubles, the winning pair will walk away with $123,710, and the runner-up will split $65,980, a 20% increase for both.

You can find a complete breakdown of the Mexican Open’s prize money in the following tables with historical data for reference and comparison.

2023 Full Breakdown

At a high level, the tournament distributes 80% of the prize money to singles and 20% to doubles. Like all ATP tournaments, both disciplines see increases in prize money as a player advances.

For example, the winner will earn nearly 24 times as much as a player who exits the tournament in the first round. For complete detail, the following tables break down prize money by round since 2007, including older data for the WTA event. To view historical numbers, you can scroll left to right.

I’ve also converted US dollars to euros and sterling pounds, which I calculate using the prior year’s exchange rate on the day of the final for a close approximation of value.

Prize Money by Year

Every year, tournament officials set their prize money, which may increase or decrease due to various factors, including the success of the prior year’s event.

Nearly all tournaments see the vast majority of their revenue through ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and concessions, so if they have a down year, it can impact prize money. For example, in 2021, prize money declined by 43% due to restricted crowds from the pandemic.

The following table outlines the total yearly prize money at the event for historical context, starting in 2000. Since then, the prize money has grown by 187%, which is impressive.
