China Open Prize Money
2024 Breakdown & Historicals
The China Open is one of the year’s most significant tennis tournaments, featuring a WTA 1000 and ATP 500 event, one of several that comprise the Asian swing that picks up after the US Open concludes.
The event takes place on hard courts at the Beijing International Tennis Center in Beijing, China, which the country constructed for the 2008 Olympic Games and expanded in 2011. During his six appearances, Novak Djokovic has never lost a match, winning every time he’s played.
In 2024, the WTA tournament’s total prize money tops out at $8,127,389, equal to €7,674,287 £6,655,884, representing a 1.91% decline in prize money and the second-highest purse in the tournament’s history.
On the ATP side, prize money is $3,720,165, translating to €3,403,077 and £2,863,504 for a moderate 2% increase over last year and the event’s largest purse in history for men.
The ATP singles champion will do well this year, earning a check for $695,750, while the runner-up will pocket $374,340. Both sums equate to a 2% increase compared to 2023.
In doubles, the winning men’s team will split $228,510, while their competitors who fall short of the title will earn $121,870, representing a 2% increase for both versus the prior year.

2024 Full Breakdown
The highest level breakdown of prize money at the China Open is by discipline, with singles receiving 80% of the purse and doubles 20%.
Prize money breaks down further by round, where players who make it deeper into the tournament earn more. For context, the winner in men’s singles will receive roughly 19% of the total prize money, more than 23 times the amount a player gets if they lose in the first round.
The following tables break down prize money at the China Open by round since 2004 for the WTA and 2007 for the ATP. You can scroll left to right to view the entire data set. For a quick comparison, I’ve converted euros to US dollars and sterling pounds, which I calculate using the prior year’s exchange rate on the day of the final for a close approximation of value.

Prize Money by Year
Prize money at the Madrid Open changes yearly. Although it often increases, there are years when it decreases due to various factors influencing the event’s revenue.
Generally, the most crucial factors affecting revenue are ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and concessions, so if the tournament underperforms in a given year, prize money will often decrease.
For example, in 2020, tournament officials canceled the event, resulting in significantly lower prize money the following year in 2021.
Despite some down years, the prize money has increased substantially for men and women at the Madrid Open, more than doubling since 2009 for the ATP and WTA. For full context, the following table outlines the total yearly prize money at the event starting in 2008.
