Rolex Shanghai Masters Prize Money
2024 Breakdown & Historicals
The Rolex Shanghai Masters is the eighth of nine ATP Masters 1000 events held annually in Shanghai, China, and the only Masters tournament held in Asia, offering some of the biggest prize money in our sport.
The event held its first edition in 2009 and quickly became a tour favorite among athletes, winning Tournament of the Year in the ATP Masters category for five consecutive years through 2013. They haven’t won since, but it’s worth noting that organizers canceled the event for the last three years due to travel restrictions in the country.
The tournament takes place at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, featuring a 96-player singles draw and 32 teams for doubles, which the venue is more than equipped to handle as the largest in Asia.
For 2024, the prize money reaches its highest mark at $8,995,555, equating to €8,230,663 and £7,096,503. In total, prize money has increased by 17.75% since it last ran in 2019. However, although noteworthy, the increase can mainly be attributed to expanding the draw from 56 singles and 24 doubles to 96 singles and 32 in doubles, as many other Masters 1000 events have done in recent years.
The winner will take home a generous $1,100,000 paycheck, while the runner-up will pocket $585,000, which has decreased by 13% and 12% compared to last year due to the draws expansion.
In doubles, the champion pair will earn $447,300, and the runner-up team will split $236,800, representing a 2% increase for both, as more teams are now in the draw.

2024 Full Breakdown
At a high level, tournament organizers distribute roughly 80% of prize money at the Rolex Shanghai Masters to singles, while the doubles events receive the remaining funds or 20%.
Prize money breaks down further by round, where players who make it deeper into the tournament earn more. For context, the winner in singles will receive roughly 14% of the total prize money, more than 40 times the amount a player gets if they lose in the first round or 0.35% of the purse.
The following tables break down prize money at the Rolex Shanghai Masters by round since starting in 2009. You can scroll left to right to view the entire data set. For a quick comparison, I’ve converted euros to US dollars and sterling pounds, which I calculate using the prior year’s exchange rate on the day of the final for a close approximation of value.

Prize Money by Year
Prize money at the Rolex Shanghai Masters changes yearly. Although it has increased every year since launching in 2009, if the tournament’s revenues are down, it can be subject to a decrease.
Generally, the most crucial factors affecting revenue are ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and concessions, so if the tournament underperforms in a given year, prize money will often soften.
